Spring and the Nature of Water

2013AprilRedbudclip

Winter changes into Spring…….Redbud bursts into glorious bloom!  Redbud is native to our area and is one of my favorite trees.  After the flowers fade, the heart shaped leaves appear.  I’ve planted a Redbud tree in Sally’s Memory Garden.

2013AprilViolets

Viola species or Heart’s Ease – beautiful native plant with medicinal value.  More heart shaped leaves…….these young, tender leaves are delicious in salads.  Medicinal teas can be made to ease sore throat and congestion.  Some sources report that Viola contains anti-cancer compounds.

Viola is a significant part of The Herbarie’s Rose Phytolate and is soothing to skin.

NestingHouseFinchclip

House Finch nesting – five eggs!   Last year her nest was built on a narrow porch ledge and sadly fell to the ground.   This year her nest is strongly built, safe and secure.  When I brushed Sally, I always left some of her soft fur throughout the gardens for the birds to use as nesting material.  Notice how her fur is woven throughout the nest.  Two days ago the baby birds hatched – very exciting!  The cycle of life is without end.

2013AprilWaterfallGarden

Phlox, Lavender, Rosemary and Thyme…….lots and lots of Thyme in my garden!  Thyme and lavender make an excellent tea for congestion, colds or flu.  These herbs smell so good and make a nice addition to dream pillows.  I made a dream pillow with Rose Petals and Lavender buds for my niece Emma.

Pond with water fall.  The sound and rhythm of the water is very soothing to the senses.

According to the wisdom of the I Ching – Water reaches its goal by flowing continually.  It fills up all the places through which it flows; it does not shrink from any dangerous spot nor from any plunge and nothing can make it lose its essential nature.  It remains true to itself under all conditions.

2013MayPeaceFromJay2013MayPeaceRose

This beautiful Peace rose was first planted by my dear brother Jay almost 40 years ago when he was a boy.  After his death, I transplanted it from my mother’s home to the farm and it’s been here about 15 years.  I call this rose “Jay’s Rose” and it blooms for me every year on my birthday!  This year it was the first rose to bloom and is still blooming.  Every time I pass by I think of Jay.

2013MayReve_dOr

Reve dOr – Dream of Gold – Noisette climber with fragrant, creamy gold blossoms.  This rose is only two years old, but in another year will cover this pergola.

Lady Banksia in all her glory!  With one of my favorite White Oaks in the background.  This is the view from my new processing room – so beautiful!

2013MayCrepesculeNearOffice

Crepescule is a Noisette climber that lives beside the office door that leads into our break room.  These beautifully colored blossoms remind me of sunrise – all shades of peach, apricot, creamy pink.  I gave Jean a bouquet to take home last week.

**********************************************************************

Today is rainy and cold and reminds me of Winter even though the roses are beginning to bloom.   After years of drought, the rain started in December and hasn’t stopped.  The pond is abundantly full and over flowing.  The water is powerful and persistent and has found another path around the dam and even formed a new water fall flowing into the creek on the other side.  The creek is flowing continuously and confidently around and over the rocks and through the crevices forming new shapes and creating new life.

Best Wishes for a new path filled with abundant blessings……..Angie

Winter Into Spring

 WhiteOakSpiritResize

I enjoy the quiet stillness and solitude of nature that come with this time of year.  From the Winter Solstice throughout January and now into February, the woods behind my house silently beckon to me.  The White Oak and Red Cedar share their strength and integrity.  The Willow teaches me how to bend.  All have their stories to tell.  So each morning I walk into the woods and listen.

 PondResize

I walk down to the pond and along the creek.  The creek ran strong when we bought this land in 1996.  But over time, with less and less rainfall each year, by last summer the creek stopped flowing and the pond was bone dry.  Our long drought made it seem like it would never flow again.  I think now about how I decided to make the drought an opportunity to dig a deeper pond.  The new “pond” was a big empty hole for weeks and weeks.  I remember hoping and believing that by the following spring the pond would be full.  With no rain for weeks the outlook was bleak.  But in December it started to rain and by the end of January, the pond was full!  I didn’t have to wait for Spring!  Now the creek is running strong again, the pond is full and the water is flowing!  I’m grateful and filled with joy.

Our southern Winter is usually mild and colored mostly with soft greys, mossy greens and browns.

LookingUp2Resize

In the winter I love to lie on the ground under the trees.  I like to imagine myself part of the earth and feel myself part of the trees and the birds and the air. I like to think of the Root Children, resting underground.

The bare branches and vibrant green of pine and cedar against blue sky gives me a new perspective on life.

Winter is a beautiful and magical time of year.  This is the perfect time for introspection, for going deep, for long intimate visits with the Root Children.  I enjoy spending time with my woodland friends.

But Spring is just around the corner.  The daffodils have been blooming since early January.

The hyacinths and yellow jessamine are also blooming.  Just yesterday I noticed the early trees are waking up to bud.  In the garden the daylilies, lemon balm, spearmint and other summer plants are pushing up through the soil.  I can imagine the Root Children are very busy preparing for the glorious Spring show.  I am thinking that I may not be quite ready for Spring.  I’d like for Winter to stay for a while longer.   But no, it’s all a cycle, always changing, always ebbing and flowing.  Life is like that.

Beautiful Sweet Sally – Beloved Guardian Dog

Dear Friend and Companion

Strong Enough to Be Gentle

Thank you for the Lessons

Forever In My Heart

*******

Do not stand at my grave and weep;

I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow

I am the diamond glint of snow

I am the sunlight on ripened grain

I am the autumn’s rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there – I did not die.

Autumn!

The Tea Olives are Blooming! Tea Olive (Osmanthus) are growing throughout all the gardens at Stoney Hill Farm. The Ginger Lily are still blooming as well as a few Honeysuckle, but right now the Tea Olives fill the air with heavenly scent.

Osmanthus fragrans has many, many tiny flowers that are powerfully fragrant.

Sally and Cottage Cat are on their way to work at The Stoney Hill Farm office.
Many Tea Olives line our driveway.  We enjoy our walk as we sniff along the way.

Honeysuckle, Ginger Lily and Tea Olive!

August has turned out to be a wonderful month!  The past few weeks have given us lovely rainfall and moderate temperatures that feel like early Fall!

The Honeysuckle is blooming again!  When I take my morning walk around our farm, the sweet scent is so lovely.  I’ve distilled more Honeysuckle Hydrosol for The Herbarie that will hopefully last through the winter until it blooms again in the spring.  I’ve also prepared my own honeysuckle tinctures to ward off cold and flu this winter.
The Ginger Lilies are flowering and smell so heavenly!  Ginger Lily is a sure sign that Fall is on the way!  I always bring Ginger Lily into the house when it blooms and the entire house is filled with its sweet scent!  Ginger Lily is one of my absolute favorite scents!

Before long our many, many Tea Olives (osmanthus) will be flowering and sending forth their elusive, sweet scent.  This shrub is evergreen here in the south and is drought resistant, which makes it a fabulous landscape shrub.  The tiny flowers are not showy, but the scent is wonderful.  I like to prune tea olive into small trees and I have them in almost all the gardens.  The tiny flowers grow in clusters and are seldom noticed.  But visitors almost always ask about the mysterious, yet exquisite scent that drifts through the air on a bright Fall day. As seen in the picture above, I’ve lined our driveways with Tea Olive, Firepower Nandina and Melampodium – all tough, drought resistant plants that love our hot summer sun.

Our Honeysuckle, Tea Olive, and Ginger Lily remind me of the new scented botanical extract called Asian Lily.  And as promised,  Sensique Scented Botanical Extract Asian Lily is on the way!  Asian Lily is a special blend of natural botanical extracts and should be in stock the first part of September.  Asian Lily is light and softly exotic and perfect to use in fragrance-free formulations.

My faithful roses are still blooming here and there.  Maggie has been in bloom all summer.  The Tea Roses – Monsieur Tillier and Mrs. B.R. Cant are  lush and full of blooms.   Othello (David Austin) Rose is very sweet and hot pink.

The delicate climber Awakening grows beside the cottage porch among the Artemesia and day lilies.  The Camellia sasanqua are full of buds and will be blooming soon.

Zinnias are everywhere and are every color of pink, orange, and yellow.  Butterflies and bees love these happy flowers!   They are also a delight to me every summer and are always welcome to reseed in my gardens!

Cardinal Flower is wrapped around the pergola and is very attractive to hummingbirds. When I gave a garden tour last week, the hummers were zooming all around us from flower to flower.

The muscadines are ripe and ready to be picked!

Sally is working in the office today and I’m working in my lab.  The Herbarie has taken a break from processing orders until Tuesday, September 4.  During this time, I’m hoping to be able to catch up on my “to do” list as well as some needed R&R!

Over the next few weeks we are going to be upgrading to use WordPress for blogging.  We also plan to connect with Facebook from the new blog.  Once everything is complete, I’ll let everyone know so we can all migrate over to the new place!

Best Wishes for a Good Holiday Weekend!
Angie & Sally

Happiness is the Smile of a Dog

That’s what I am looking at right now and yes, it brings me great joy 🙂
The past few weeks have been grueling.  After the chemotherapy treatment, Sally experienced terrible nausea and upset stomach.  She was very sick and didn’t eat or drink for almost two weeks.  She had little energy and it seemed she was losing her spirit.  We had to rush to the vet three times for her to receive fluids subcutaneously.  Thankfully the fluids did seem to revive her each time.  Eventually Sally was able to eat small amounts of baby food and chicken, but I had to hand feed her because she had no strength and no appetite.  Finally after a couple of weeks, the chemo meds were out of her system and she began to eat and drink again.  We’ve decided not to do anymore chemo treatments.   We are hoping that this one chemo treatment was enough to rid her body of stray cancer cells.
But this is what we know:  Today we are happy and enjoying life!
For the past week, Sally has been gaining strength and gradually moving around more.   We both missed our walk together around the property feeding the animals, but she just didn’t have the strength to do it.  So, I’ve been letting her rest just outside our house while I go around the farm to feed the critters and water the gardens.  I confess that it felt lonely without her and I longed for her to become strong again.  This past week I was watering the various gardens and I left Sally resting beside the grape arbors.  As I was watering in the cottage garden, Sally walk/hopped on her own through the gate!  She came around the corner with a huge smile on her face and happy wagging tail!  She was very proud of herself and I was so filled with joy and so thankful at seeing her full of spirit again.  C.C. the Cottage Cat was happy to see Sally back again too.
Today, Sally walk/hopped all the way around the property!  We still take it slow and the trip around the property takes about an hour or two.  With all that I have to do and feeling that I never will get it all done, I have a tendency to move fast and am always on the go – multi-tasking all the while.  But Sally has taught me that it’s much better to move slowly and to just be in the moment – not easy for me to do, but with Sally as an excellent role model I’m trying.
This Sunday morning we spent time in all the gardens and savored the rare and lovely cool weather and fresh rainfall.  The Cottage Cat (C.C.) went with us.  Sally rested while I harvested more Holy Tulsi Basil and Sweet Violet Leaves for her tea. The dear roses are blooming again!  Hummers are busy humming in Hummer Haven.  And all is right with the world!
 Ginger Lily & Mandevilla
Holy Tulsi Basil near the Secret Garden gate
Holy Tulsi Basil from last year reseeded and is now everywhere in all the gardens.
Maggie is almost always full of blooms!  She has a wonderful damask fragrance and frilly, hot pink flowers.

Monsieur Tillier forgave me for the severe pruning this spring and is covered with carmine pink flowers.

Sally is full of good, positive energy now!

And most importantly her sweet spirit is back!

Love and all good wishes,
Angie & Sally
